prospective freshman FAQ
How do I apply as an undergraduate freshman?
The UT Austin Office of Admissions administers freshman admission to the School of Architecture. Please visit their website at www.utexas.edu/student/admissions/
Do you require a portfolio?
No. We do not accept portfolios for freshman admissions.
Do I need a specific class rank, GPA or SAT/ACT score to apply or be admitted?
We do not have minimum admissions requirements, but typically the admitted Architecture students fall in the top quarter of their class, have a high school GPA of 3.0 or above, SAT of 2000 or above (on the 2400 point scale), and ACT of 30 or above.
Do you require specific high school courses?
The Office of Admissions has minimum high school course requirements to be eligible to apply for admission to the University. Refer to our Be A Longhorn web site for a detailed discussion of the minimum high school course requirements. The School of Architecture does not impose additional requirements. However, we recommend that high school students take AP courses (if available) in physics, pre-calculus, and calculus. In addition, we recommend humanities and elective art classes, such as drawing.
How many students are in The School of Architecture and how many students do you accept each year?
We have around 330 undergraduates. Out of roughly 750 freshman applicants, we admit 95 students.
What is your student to teacher ratio in design studios?
13 to 1
The application asks for a first and second major choice. Should I choose two majors of study in The School of Architecture just in case I am not admitted to my first choice?
No, if a student is not accepted into one major of in the School of Architecture, then they will not be accepted into any other major within our school. Therefore, your first major should be one of the five that The School of Architecture offers (listed below) and the second choice should be in a major in another college/school at the University.
908000 Bachelor of Science in Interior Design
908400 Bachelor of Science in Architectural Studies
909200 Bachelor of Architecture
909201 Bachelor of Architecture/Bachelor of Science in Architectural Engineering
909300 Bachelor of Architecture/Bachelor of Arts in Plan II
Are the SAT subject tests in Math Level 1 or 2 required for admittance into the School of Architecture?
Although they are not required, students are expected to have achieved a satisfactory score on the SAT II: Mathematics Level I or II exam. Students whose scores on the SAT II: Mathematics exam are insufficient for placement into pre-calculus (M 305G) or calculus (M 408C) must take college algebra and/or pre-calculus prior to enrolling in Math 408C (Calculus). College algebra is not taught at UT-Austin during fall and spring semesters. College algebra and pre-calculus will not count toward any of the undergraduate degrees offered by the School of Architecture.
Does the School of Architecture offer scholarships?
The School of Architecture offers various competitive scholarships. Students are eligible to apply after completing the fall semester of their first year.
Must I attend summer orientation?
We expect all incoming freshman to attend one of the two orientation sessions in June in which the School of Architecture participates.
