M.A. Program

History faculty in the School of Architecture review the applications and recommend admission to the Graduate School. Prerequisites for admission include a baccalaureate degree, 12 hours of architectural history, which may include courses in art history, history, or related subjects, plus design experience satisfied by coursework or by demonstration of prior field or professional architectural experience.

To apply for the M.A. program in architectural history, prospective students should follow the SOA graduate admissions instructions.

Additionally, applicants must submit a writing sample and a statement of intent describing the student's objectives for graduate study in architectural history at the University of Texas at Austin.

Ph.D. Program

The Architecture Ph.D. Committee reviews applications and recommends admission to the Graduate School. Prerequisites for admission include the master's degree in architectural history or equivalent in course work or professional experience approved by the Ph.D. Committee. For example, equivalency may be achieved by a master's degree in art history that includes at least three graduate seminars in architectural history. Also required is reading proficiency in French, German, Italian, or other languages approved by the Ph.D. Committee.
