SPEAKER BIO:

Curtis Fentress was born in Greensboro, North Carolina, and graduated with honors from the College of Design at North Carolina State University with a Bachelor of Architecture degree. There, he won the Alpha Rho Chi Medal, the highest honor bestowed on a designer by an architectural school.

After graduation he headed to New York City and landed a job with I.M. Pei. Fentress later joined the newly formed firm of Kohn Pedersen Fox to continue his pursuit of large-scale public projects while striving to bring humanism to civic buildings. In the late 1970s, KPF led him to Denver, Colorado, as project designer for the 36-story Amoco Building. He was soon named “Young Professional of the Year” by Building Design and Construction magazine.

Inspired by opportunities in the west, in 1980 Fentress opened his own studio in Denver and later was awarded the opportunity to design Denver International Airport, which propelled him into the international realm. DIA, Incheon International Airport in Seoul, South Korea, and numerous other airports, courthouses, government buildings, city halls, museums, high rises, convention centers and laboratories have been honored with nearly 500 awards for innovation and design excellence. Fentress is internationally recognized for his innovative design portfolio, featured in over 1,200 national and international articles and books.

Curtis Fentress was the 2010 winner of the American Institute of Architects’ Thomas Jefferson Award, the highest honor in public architecture worldwide, and received the Architect of the Year award from AIA Colorado in 2012.
