Professor Milovanovic-Bertram is an outstanding professor who has received both the Texas Excellence Teaching Award from the UT Ex-Students Association and the School of Architecture's Teaching Excellence Award (1996 & 2002). She sees teaching Construction and Design Process, Visual Com, and a seminar on Italian cities as an enviable opportunity to explore both theoretical and practical issues of architecture. Milovanovic-Bertram was a contributor to the process of making major first, second and third year level curricular changes at the School of Architecture. A practicing architect, Professor Milovanovic-Bertram earned a design excellence award from the Austin Design Commission and a Citation from the Austin Chapter AIA for the Breed Hardware Store. Milovanovic-Bertram's initial research into the influence of an architect's design philosophy on their practice was supported by a Mike Hogg Endowment.

Smilja is also director of Study in Italy, an intradisciplinary program with the College of Liberal Arts, College of Fine Arts and the School of Architecture.
